The Sound AlchemistsBack

The legacy and evolution of South Indian music and dance are deeply intertwined with the region’s rich tradition of musical instruments. MOPA’s documentary series, The Sound Alchemists, explores the origins and historical evolution of these instruments, highlights the virtuosos who have mastered them, and examines contemporary trends in their use. Through the lens of some of the most gifted, young practitioners of their chosen instruments, MOPA seeks to offer an immersive journey into the soundscapes that define our performing arts. It is named for the remarkable young musicians featured in it—artists who, through an alchemic process of hard work, dedication, passion and creativity, transform the sound of their chosen instrument into music that is transcendent.

The first episode of this series is a tribute to the Veena—a vessel that carries within it, centuries of musical tradition. It is an attempt to showcase the profound space the Veena holds in our musical heritage, through the lens of one of its most gifted young practitioners today – Ramana Balachandhran, who, while rooted in tradition, seeks to explore and expand its possibilities. And through this film, we hope to offer you a glimpse into its world—one of intricate craftsmanship, immersive soundscapes, and timeless allure.

Reviews

It is very important to think with a broad mind and explore different ways to express music. Ramana Balachandran has covered many aesthetic aspects of the veena through this episode. Amazed by his knowledge and innovative thoughts.

Beautiful initiative and production on the mesmerising soundscape of the Veena - narration and demonstration as fluid and filled with substance and class as Ramana ji’s playing
